THE MONSTROUS MAY CHALLENGE is an annual prompt challenge to encourage new, monstrous-focused creations, with a prompt for every day of the month.
I started writing the challenge in 2021 and running it with prompts in 2022 – every year, I put together a bunch of prompts particularly intended for monster enthusiasts, especially fans of monstrous romance and erotica, to encourage new creations.
Every year, May 30th is The Minotaur – May 30th is my birthday, and the Minotaur is my favourite monster!
You can write short stories, poems, essays, audio works, short films, recommend movies or books, make social media posts, aesthetic posts, playlists, draw sketches, paint, do bits of sculpture or knitting or crochet, or anything else! Anything you feel might be fun for a prompt, you are encouraged to create.
If you’d like to join in, post away on social media — on Twitter or Bluesky, Tumblr or Pillowfort, Instagram or Threads, on your own websites, or wherever you’d like to! You’re encouraged to use the tag or hashtags #Monstrous May or #MonstrousMayChallenge, and of course, to browse through those tags on your favoured sites to support and engage with others’ creations.
A last assurance, given the actions of some shittier challenge creators: I will never attempt to trademark the challenge or try to take over or impact your rights to your artwork and creations based on your taking part in the challenge – anything you create for Monstrous May is yours, and you’re always welcome to use prompts from previous years as jumping-off points or inspiration, or even to come up with your own alternate Monstrous May prompt lists. I will never attempt to restrict the sale of other people’s art work or writing on the basis that it mentions being created for or during Monstrous May.
The point of Monstrous May in my mind is to encourage creation and community, and for us to have fun together making fucked-up monsters and, crucially, making those monsters fuck.
