BristolCon this weekend!

Getting ready for my train down south tomorrow and for two days at BristolCon!

I’m not running a stall this year, so I won’t be in the market room, but I’ll be around here and there about the hotel over the next few days until I come back home Sunday evening.

The full convention schedule is here, and if you’re around South Wales and the West Country and thinking of travelling for the day out, you may still be able to pay membership on the door for the day or the weekend, and some of the panels are also planned to be livestreamed. The event is at the Hilton DoubleTree in Bristol, between Bristol Temple Meads and Mary Redcliffe.

Pets in Space – Saturday 25th – 10am to 11am – Panel Room 1

I don’t want to go boldly forth if I can’t take my dog with me. How could pets be accommodated on our journey to the stars? What are the hazards of letting a bad tempered terrier loose on an entirely new ecosystem?

Panellist alongside Piotr Swietlik, Jo M Thomas (Journeymouse), and Joanne Hall. Moderated by Dr Bob.

Has Social Media Killed the Promotions Game? – Saturday 25th – 4pm to 5pm – Panel Room 2

From SPFBO to trad publishers social media has changed how books are promoted. It is far easier to reach an audience and to target specific readers, but as sites implode and platforms are vacated how do we reach an ever fracturing audience?

Reading at 3:50pm. Moderator. Panellists are Dan Batchelor, Joanne Hall, Jennifer Taylor-Gray, and Richard Stephenson.

What Potions Can’t Heal – Sunday 26th – 10am to 11am – Panel Room 1

Science fiction & fantasy often delve into all kinds of emotional, psychological, and physical trauma – war, death, plague, neglect, abuse, injury, and all manner of other hurts and harms – but what happens afterwards? What are our favourite explorations of trauma recovery, post-traumatic stress, and other issues once the adventure is over?

Moderator. Panellists are Joel Cornah, Emma Newman, Bav, and Sophia Vahdati.

Two Genders? That’s All? – Sunday 26th – 2pm to 3pm – Panel Room 1

In many fantasy and sci-fi settings, the sky is the limit in terms of magic and creation – people can have wings, tails, pointy teeth, vampire fangs, fur, hooves; houses roam the fields and sailships soar through the skies; there are dragons, unicorns, monsters… And yet of all these things, everyone’s only male or female? What, no one could imagine anything more interesting than that? A panel exploring trans and nonbinary erasure and the limits of sex and gender binary imagination in SFF.

Panellist alongside Pete Ellis, Zoe, and Dr Bob. Moderated by Cheryl Morgan.

And of course, in three weeks’ time, the launch for An Uncommon Betrothal will be at Wharf Chambers on November 16th!
