Sticky Post: Where Do I Start Reading?
I’ve just found your work and there’s a lot of it, where do I start? Welcome to my website! First off, my name is Johannes (Yo-Han-Ehz) T. Evans. I’m a gay, disabled, transgender man originally from Chepstow in the South of Wales, and I now live in Bradford in West Yorkshire, though for several years before now I lived in Galway, in the west of the Irish Republic. I’ve been writing for years, and you might actually already be familiar with my work – I’ve been on Tumblr under various URLs (before using my own name, JohannesTEvans, I was at…

A Month in Cats
Three cats in our home in the last four weeks. I love cats. We had two cats after our first dog, Jethro, died when I was growing up — mine was a tubby black-and-white darling we called Blackjack, and my sister’s was a thinner white sweetheart called Kitty, who unfortunately had a case of chronic anxiety where Blackjack had what we might call chronic overconfidence. My grandparents in Greece always kept through the years cats, generally named after cartoon characters — Wellington, Top Cat, Bagpuss, Pilchard, Kipper, Olive Oyl, Kaluki — and apart from those, I was well-familiar with local cats in the cafés and along the…

Using Epithets Effectively in One’s Writing
Putting alternatives for a character’s name to good use. Photo on picjumbo.com via Pexels. For the use of epithets, where you’re using something other than a name to refer to the character — the other man, the blond, her elder, the policeman, etc — it’s good to think about WHY you want that epithet. Why would you use an epithet instead of that character’s name? Firstly, does the POV character know that character’s name? If the POV character doesn’t know it yet, they’re likely to fixate on the most obviously unique or identifiable aspect of that person’s character to use as an epithet, and then stick…

A Queer Indie Author’s Experience of 2024
Looking back on my top stories, sales stats, and best experiences of the year past, and looking to the year ahead! A screenshot from Kindle Direct Publishing, showing my orders processed on Amazon in 2024–1548. Hello hello! I’ve just been in the process of attending to my yearly tradition, ordinarily attended to in the last days of December and the first of January — I sit down with my new year’s calendar, and I write down all the vital dates and pieces of information. On the current calendar in front of me — a charming Peter Rabbit family planner with a little attached whiteboard, as…

A Transphobe Ruined His Own Night Because I Was Existing Next to Him
Hate is a miserable business — but in this case, not for me! Originally published in Prism & Pen in December, 2024. My partner and I went to DILF Leeds for the first time this week — DILF, which obviously stands for Dad I’d Like To Fuck, is a regular gay dance night that runs here in the UK. It runs all over, in Manchester and London and a bunch of other cities, as well as more locally to us in Leeds. I will be the first to say that dance music is not my vibe as a rule, and a lot of the DJing…

Rated E, anal, cumflation, objectification, dirty talk, degradation, coming untouched. “Over you go, girl,” growls the minotaur, and Evadne holds her head up high, tries to feign confidence and haughtiness, even. Levyl hung back as the Champion talked to his majesty, who was sitting back in a tall throne on the raised dais in the centre of the great throne room, which was lit with huge bronze braziers. Alien: Romulus: An Abortive Attempt at Homage to a Classic
Romulus started out promising, then proved itself an awful disappointment. The original Alien (1979) is far and away one of my favourite sci-fi films, one I’ve written about in the past, and I have a lot of affection for Aliens (1986) and even Alien 3 (1992), for all I feel it has its narrative flaws. And then there are later additions to the original series; the less said about them, the better — later still, we see attempts at updating the series with sleek, shiny, lens-flared prequels and Michael Fassbender playing a mildly homophobic pastiche of a gay-coded eugenicist synth, these things…
